GUERRA NUCLEARE

The day before
The story of the crazy arms race
From Hiroshima to our days
By manlio dinucci

The hand of the "Doomsday Clock" - the symbolic timepiece that in the US Atomic Scientists Bulletin indicates how many minutes we have been since midnight in the nuclear war - has been moved forward: from 3 to midnight in 2015 to 2,5 Minutes at midnight in 2017. A level of alarm higher than that in the mid-2017. S, at the height of tension between the USA AND USSR.

In view of this, we would expect a alarmed reaction in scientific and cultural circles, in political and parliamentary forums and, in general, in the public opinion. It's not like that. The news that the doomsday clock is approaching nuclear midnight goes unnoticed or, however, does not arouse any particular alarm.

It appears to live in the film 'The Day After' (1983), in that small town of Kansas where life flows peacefully alongside the US nuclear missile silos, with people who the day before listen news about the crash of the international situation, as long as he sees The Intercontinental ballistic missiles fired from the silos against the USSR and shortly after the atomic mushrooms of Soviet nuclear warheads.

The book, which rebuilds the history of the nuclear arms race from 1945 to today on the backdrop of changes in the international scene, helps to fill the vacuum of information created to art on this vital issue. With the end of the Cold War, there has been a feeling that a nuclear war is now inconceivable and the dangerous illusion that we can live with the bomb. That is, with a destructive power that can erase the human species and almost any other form of life. We can avoid it, rally it to eliminate nuclear weapons from the face of the earth. As long as we're in time, the day before.
